The Harlan family have been winegrowers in California’s Napa Valley since the late 1970s. Their first endeavor, Harlan Estate, over the course of nearly four decades, has established an international benchmark for the art of viticulture. It was in the formative years, in the early 1980s, that H. William Harlan discovered another place - an isolated territory - while hiking along the southwestern ridge of Oakville. The hidden expanse moved him deeply but remained elusive until much later, when the Harlan family finally acquired it in 2008. The second generations of both family and winegrowing team joined together at this time to explore and work with the land, they began to make discoveries of their own. At the core of this wild terrain, they found a powerful geologic convergence that had shaped the land’s steep, rugged topography and created the conditions for an altogether exotic winegrowing environment. Over time they found that the dramatic landscape — just beyond the edge of the known — would slowly change them, and ultimately inspire a new endeavor: Promontory.
